Meerschaum: An artificial glass made originally by Monks in Northern Italy. This glass contains flecks of copper giving it its appearance.
A glass supersaturated with either iron, chromium, or copper oxide (or a combination of the oxides) that is melted and cooled under controlled conditions to cause the excessive oxides to crystallize, forming plate-like crystals or spangles. (Mindat.org)
